Guidance

Guidance and counseling services are available to all Washington Alternative students. The counselor is part of the intake team, which reviews the student’s transcript/grades and coordinates the class schedule with the student’s school of origin. Our goal is to help the student meet academic goals and stay on track for graduation. The counselor is also available as a resource to provide confidential services to individual students and parents on identified issues as needed. From time to time, group counseling is available through various organizations such as STARS, and CADAS. Topics include goal setting, time management, self-esteem, dealing with grief, conflict resolution and decision making skills. Individual counseling can be scheduled by the parent through Lighthouse, Richmont or Family and Children Services on issues that are personal and confidential.

Students are encouraged to take advantage of career interest and assessment tools that are available via computer. Students at Washington will be given the same battery of tests that are mandated for all students in Hamilton County, i.e. TCAP and End of Course-EOC testing. High school students are provided information on post secondary options.

The school counselor is available to assist in making academic decisions, resolving social problems, career guidance, behavior and motivational referrals, and to aid in crisis intervention. If you would like to make an appointment to meet with the counselor regarding areas of concern, please call the school at 423-893-3520.

Buses are expected to arrive within 10 minutes of their scheduled time. Please have students at their stops and ready to board the bus 10 minutes prior to the scheduled arrival time. The bus schedule can not allow more time to wait for tardy students or for students to exit personal vehicles. For more information, please see the rules of conduct in the Transportation Policy Manual

Hamilton County Schools transports more than 20,000 students to and from school each day. There are 251 daily bus routes covering 23,000 miles each day and 4.0 million miles annually. Our mission is to provide safe and efficient transportation to and from school daily.

About Us

ANCHOR ACRONYM

The Washington Way for Staff

The proposition is that students in the Washington Alternative Learning Program will continue to move forward academically and gain behavioral, social, and emotional skills to return to their home school. All WALC Staff aim to assist in this process by implementing and facilitating best practices that help students thrive.

The Washington Way for Students

The staff at WALC will assist in students’ transition in and out of Washington. We expect students to participate in class, cooperate with staff, and accept responsibility for their actions. Students are expected to become familiar with the student handbook and adhere to all expectations of the alternative program. Exit criteria will involve life-impacting strategies that make the Washington experience more than just attending for the prescribed number of days; we hope to ignite an intrinsic motivation within students to thrive in their education and behavior improvement.

The Washington Way for Parents

As staff assists students with their educational services, parental involvement is required to transition their student’s development. The goal is to work together to ensure students adhere to all guidelines communicated in the Washington Way Parent/Student Handbook during their enrollment and to equip their students to be successful in their education, make good choices, and develop socially and emotionally.
